This traffic cable is the first traffic alert device I have had that works. Great value.

It worked well in most major cities but it did noty pick up delays at tool booths or on long stretches of rural highway.

I wish I’d read JPReno’s review before I bought this. His description of how it works is correct, but I still haven’t encountered a situation where the traffic information has resulted in routing to an alternate, faster route, even though I’ve encountered several occasions where the signal was reporting a delay and a faster route was available.
If seeing this information will amuse you, then this unit delivers, but if the rosier reviews have led you to hope for actual routing on an alternate route or any saving of time spent sitting in traffic, you’re in for a major disappointment.

This doesn’t come with any instructions. Fortunately, I’ve found input from reviewers on other sites that are helping me figure it out. I live in the DFW area where there are frequent backups due to accidents. I bought this to help alert me when I need to find alternate routes. It’s worth the price if you have a unit that doesn’t come with the traffic included. If you are buying a new unit and want this feature, expect to pay the extra $100+ for the price of the unit. It only works in large metropolitan areas, so it won’t help you much if they’re doing construction on an interstate when you are traveling. I guess there are still some things AAA is good for! Don’t waste your money on anything with MSN Direct traffic. Microsoft is dropping support for MSN Direct in early 2011.

If you are a commuter & you don’t value time spent behind the wheel, this item can save you from misery of sitting in traffic. It will give an estimate of how much of a delay & prompt the user for an alternate route. I haven’t quite figured out the “alternate” part of it yet because it will display message: “you have already been given the fastest possible route”. I usually stick with the traffic I’m in but I’ll tune into a traffic station to find out the delay & if it is something major, I go ahead & take another route.
This cord allows for trffic updates & I don’t know if it does nearly the same as MSN? MSN will update certain businesses so they can be contacted on the fly but when you first purchase the unit, there are a lot of businesses that can be contacted for restaurants, gas stations or hotels. Your GPS unit will lead you to them & a phone call will get you the information you need.
The cord can also be used as power charger, even with A/C if you have an adapter.
